Bulgarian language is one of the oldest languages in the world. This is the language spoken by the native Bulgarian (Bulgar) people that occupied wide area in eastern Europe and western Asia since millennia. According to the official history, in year 863 the Cyrillic alphabet was created and accepted as the official alphabet in the First Bulgarian Empire by the by Saints Cyril and Methodius. Five centuries of Ottoman rule introduced many Turkish words in the language. Along with the closely related Macedonian language (collectively forming the East South Slavic languages), it is a member of the Balkan sprachbund. The two languages have several characteristics that set it apart from all other Slavic languages: changes include the elimination of case declension, the development of a suffixed definite article and the lack of a verb infinitive, but it retains and has further developed the Proto-Slavic verb system.
